Being Grateful, Winter Holidays & Community Outreach

The staff and volunteers of the Jamerson Memorial Library would to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! We are grateful for all the support and participation of our patrons as we wrap on one year and look forward to the next.

Photo – left to right are Linda Kitchel, Mary Ann Almond, and Gloria Garrison from the Garden Club putting the finishing touches on the outside of the Jamerson Library.

A huge thank you to the Appomattox Garden Club for providing the fresh-cut greenery wreaths and swags for our front doors, as well as outside sconces to match this year’s candy land gingerbread-inspired winter wonderland decor. For almost three decades, the Garden Club has offered their time and talent to help spread Christmas joy to Main Street by providing this service to us and other local organizations.

For Wednesday, November 19th’s Story & Craft Time, our resident Library Fairy MaKayla presented the book “Robin Hill School: We Are Thankful” by Margaret McNamara. It’s almost Thanksgiving, and Mrs. Connor asks the class to think about what they are thankful for. Reza and his mama make a list together. He can’t wait to talk to his class about his family, his dog, his bike, and so much more! But then at school, everyone takes turns saying what they’re thankful for, and the other kids say the same things Reza wanted to say! Can Reza think of something else he’s thankful for before it’s his turn to speak? The kids enjoyed snacks while decorating turkey masks. Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday there will be no Story & Craft Time on Wednesday, November 26th. Our next Story & Craft Time will be on December 3rd, starting at 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. Our guest reader will be Ranger Chance from Holliday Lake, he will feature the book “Three Little Beavers” by Jean H. Diehl. Everyone is welcome to attend with the understanding that this program is intended for preschool patrons.

Thursday, November 20th was a busy day for the Library. Staff worked on more Christmas decorations, and we hosted two different programs in one day. We featured After School Crafts with MaKayla for “Bad Art – Thanksgiving” and the kids made an assortment of Thanksgiving-inspired crafts with lots of embellishments while enjoying snacks. To wrap up the day, we hosted a movie inspired by a short story about a high-society woman in late-1800’s New York. When her estranged daughter becomes ill and is too proud to ask her mother for assistance, the granddaughter takes it upon herself to contact her grandmother and plead for help. Upon the daughter’s arrival, it causes an upheaval in many lives, but may also lead to reconciliation within the family. Our next Jamerson Movie Time will be on Wednesday, December 10th, starting at 5:30pm.

On Friday, November 21st, we hosted a private movie time for a group of adults who need a safe and quiet place to meet up. If you are interested in having the Library host a private craft, story, movie or other type of event for you, please feel free to reach out to us.

On Saturday, November 22nd, Library Fairy MaKayla worked her Christmas magic by loaning the Library her camera and talent for the Family, Friends & Small Group Holiday Photos . If you have missed this opportunity, we welcome you to make use of our gingerbread-inspired photo spot outside our front doors. Inside, we have a Grinch banner and if the community room is unoccupied there is the indoor photo spot, just ask an employee if it available.

This year, the Library is sponsoring several outreach programs. One is “Elves for Elders”, hosted by Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living Inc. (CVACL). Patrons are encouraged to pick an ornament tag off the tree, located in the Library’s foyer, and help provide Christmas to a local senior citizen who may not otherwise have one. Gifts are due back by 5:00 pm on December 5th. CVACL requests that you do not wrap gifts, but instead put them in a bag or box with the ornament tag. There is also an option to bring in lotion, puzzles, tissues, gift cards, blankets, towels, gloves, hats, or other items to help put together needed gifts for ornament tags that were not taken or not returned.

We also have a box for St. Anne’s Community Christmas Tree outreach near the circulation desk for patrons to bring in lightly used and new gifts for children from preschool through high school age. St. Anne’s works with other local churches to help provide Christmas gifts for families in need. If you have an extra toy, blanket, socks, coloring books, art supplies, books, clothes, or other such items you are encouraged to donate, and help spread the Christmas Spirit throughout Appomattox.

The Library is accepting donations of Meal in a Bag Kits, which will be distributed to households throughout our community to help ensure that every family has access to a warm and nourishing meal during the holidays. Donations may be dropped off at the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library during regular operating hours.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Women of the Moose and the Moose Lodge in Appomattox, the Library is putting together numerous Meal in a Bag Kits. We have added new recipe cards to our website and look forward to working with St. Anne’s Episcopal Church to make sure that those families in need are provided for.

If you would like to participate, the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library has a box of gallon-sized zipper bags with recipe cards in them, so all you have to do is fill the bag and return it to the library.
For a list of suggested items and sample recipes, please visit our website at: https://www.jrjml.org/tbtc/ to view the Meal in a Bag recipe cards. Your participation and generosity will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors this season.

In observation of the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Library will be closed from Wednesday, November 26th, through Friday, November 28th. We will reopen for normal business hours on Saturday, November 29th, starting at 9:30 am. The book drop, located at the back of the building, will remain open.

Looking to get your Christmas gifts wrapped? The Appomattox County Library Association (ACLA) along with Library Staff and volunteers will host their first “Wrapping For A Cause” on Thursday, December 4th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm inside the Library’s community room. Get your gifts nicely wrapped, complete with bows, in exchange for a monetary donation. All donations will go to ACLA to support the Jamerson Library.

Raining Dogs & Cats, Plants & Plans

The Library didn’t let a little rain, ok, a lot of rain dampened our Royal Party on Saturday, September 27th. We simply moved into the community room to welcome knights and princesses for cupcakes, games, and sword fights! We had such a good time and plan on offering another Royal Party next spring for those who may have missed out on the fun or wish to attend as a returning guest.

The rain continued on Monday, September 29th, but it didn’t slow the Library down. Library Director Mrs. Cindy Scheu and a staff member set up a vending station at “The Good Neighbor Information and Help Center” program hosted by Grace Hills Baptist Church. The purpose of this program was to offer local seniors much-needed information about the importance of wills, Medicare and health insurance, financial preparedness, bank scams, and more. The Library along with several other vendors offered information directed toward senior citizens to potentially enhance their well-being mentally, financially, and physically. The Library passed out newsletters, other library-related information, swag bags and bookmarks to each person who stopped by our booth.

The dogs were back! Twice yearly Old Dominion K-9 SAR (Search And Rescue) from Tennessee comes to central Virginia to train personal and professional working dogs all over the east coast in the art of man trailing and other skills need to locate persons in need. They practice in the town’s parking lot behind the Library, and staff welcomes them inside to help tune the skills of handlers and dogs alike. The Library staff put out a table with fresh hot coffee, cream, assorted sweeteners and donuts to show their appreciation for all the hard work that this group does to keep everyone safe and give hope that rescue resources are available when the time arises.

On Wednesday, October 1st’s Story and Craft Time Library Fairy traded in her wings for a witch’s hat as she presented the book “The Leaf Thief” by Alice Hemming and Nicola Slater. Squirrel loves counting the leaves on his tree – red leaves, gold leaves, orange, and more. But hold on! One of his leaves is missing! On a quest to find the missing leaf, Squirrel teams up with his good friend Bird to discover who the leaf thief could be among their forest friends. The kids enjoyed snacks while making a squirrel hide-and-seek leaf scene. Our next Story and Craft Time will be on Wednesday, October 8th, at 11:00 am and 12:00 pm, featuring author Kerri Rundstrom as she reads her book “Max and the Moo Mystery”! A playful and empowering book that helps kids understand what alpha-gal allergies are and helps to build food confidence by becoming label-reading superheroes. The Library will serve alpha-gal friendly snacks.

We had a last-minute booking on Wednesday, for a private craft and movie time. We managed to rock it by providing a beaded pumpkin craft and showing a movie from the famous teenage detective team with a green flowered van and a clever dog.

Also, on Wednesday the Library welcomed Curtis from Farmers Bank of Appomattox. Curtis provided participants with the opportunity to educate themselves on established and new banking scams and how to protect yourself from the classic and ever-changing trends designed to fraudulently gain access to your funds. The public was allowed to ask questions, express concerns, or share personal stories. Curtis had several informational sheets and bookmarks to remind those that attended the signs to watch out for. The next Farmers Bank presentation will be on Tuesday, October 21st, starting at 5:00 pm in the Library’s community room.

The much-anticipated Fall Plant Swap was held in the Library’s community room on Thursday, October 2nd. Patrons brought in plants and exchanged them for others in this fun interactive program designed to spark an interest in gardening, indoor plants, and horticulture education. The Library carries a nice selection indoor and outdoor gardens, plants, succulents, landscaping books and a growing seed library.

On Friday, October 3rd we hosted a small group of adults for a private movie time, providing them with snacks and a safe, quiet place to gather and enjoy an activity. If your group wants the Library to host an event for you please feel free to reach out to us.

A HUGE thank you to owner Alexis from Griffin’s Garden, an up-and-coming micro flower farm new to Appomattox. Griffin’s Garden was the first business to host herb/vegetable/flower beds at the Library! Alexis personally came to the Library on Friday to plant lettuce, spinach, and wildflowers in the three beds that Griffin’s Garden is sponsoring! She has plans on changing the beds out seasonally to host a variety of herbs, vegetables, and flowers to attract local bees, birds, and butterflies. The Library welcomes families, businesses and other organizations to sponsor their own bed(s) of zone-friendly plants.

On Saturday October 4th the Library Director hosted her monthly Creative Class for Adults. Using recycled tin cans, paint, mod-podge, and napkins attendees created pretty planters. The Library provided all supplies including dirt and pre-rooted plants so everyone took home a completed planter.

The Library has a short but full week of programs next week, including several family resource organizations, Story & Craft Time, Teen & Adult Book Clubs, Girls Who Code, a poster contest creation time hosted by Robert E Lee Soil and Water Conservation District, a spooky telling of an Edgar Allen Poe short story, and hosting a private movie time.

This Library has taken an active role in our community for nearly 3 decades and currently we are working in conjunction with Friends of Holliday Lake by displaying their “Stained Glass Vision” quilt they are raffling off to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and Friends of Holliday Lake. This beautiful quilt was donated by Celeste of Country Lane Quilter in honor of her dear friend Lorraine. Lorriane, who has since passed away from cancer, started this quilt and it was finished by Celeste and friends in her memory. If you would like to see the quilt in person we encourage you to stop by the Library. For chances on this quilt, you may contact Celeste at 603-547-5903 or visit the Friends of Holliday Lake’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100080228708707

Penny and her posse are still ridding strong around Appomattox. If you find Penny, or a member of her posse (a cat-shaped rubber duck) you are encouraged to bring them back to the Library and exchange them for a Penny Pincher Posse Prize. We will continue to hide Penny and members of her posse around town until all the kitty-ducks have vanished. To keep this fun and interactive game going we encourage you to return the kitty-ducks. Once they are gone, the game is over.

In observation of the Railroad Festival and Columbus Day, the Library will be closed to the public from Friday, October 10th, through Monday, October 13th. The book depository at the back of the building will also be closed during this time. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our patrons. • Appomattox FFA Excels at the 99th Annual State FFA Convention

Appomattox FFA Excels at the 99th Annual State FFA Convention

The Appomattox Senior and Appomattox Middle FFA chapters traveled to the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, to participate in multiple statewide Career Development Events (CDEs) and Leadership Development Events (LDEs) June 9-12, 2025. CDEs assess the knowledge and skills of FFA members on various agricultural topics. Participating in these events allows FFA members to develop industry-driven career skills. Middle school chapter members participated in the Creed Speaking, Junior and Senior Hippology, and the FFA Quiz Bowl contests. High school chapter members participated in the Senior Agricultural Education, Senior Agricultural Mechanics, Avian Bowl, Discussion Meet, Employment Skills, Floriculture,  Livestock Judging, Nursery Landscape, Horticulture, and Veterinary Science CDEs. The members of each team spent several weeks of their summer vacation studying and preparing for these events.

Both AMS and ACHS FFA were recognized with the “100% Membership Award” for ensuring that every agriculture student is also an FFA member. This was made possible through the generous support of the Appomattox County Farm Bureau. The high school chapter received a gold rating in the public relations award and was named the Southeast Area Chapter Forestry and Wildlife award. Chapter Reporter, Gracie Covington, prepared a scrapbook detailing chapter events over the past year that earned a bronze rating. AMS FFA received a silver rating in the public relations award and earned a bronze rating for the superior chapter contest. Appomattox Senior FFA also received a gold rating in the superior chapter contest, earning the opportunity to attend the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, this October. Additionally, the chapter was the state champion in the Growing Leaders division of the contest. ACHS FFA was crowned the Southeast Area winner in the Building Communities. The chapter was also declared the overall top chapter in the state.

Colton Jones represented his chapter and the Southeast Area in the state championship for the Creed Speaking Leadership Development Event. He qualified to participate by winning the Southeast Area event in March. During the state championship, Jones recited the FFA creed from memory and answered questions from a panel of judges for five minutes. Ultimately, he placed 6th in the state-level competition.

Appomattox Primary School teacher Jean Moore helped coach two hippology teams from AMS. Hippology is a competition that tests participants’ knowledge of the equine industry. Contestants completed a written exam covering various topics related to horses, including breed identification, horse leg conformation, color patterns, and anatomical features. Additionally, they participated in events assessing their understanding of horse feeds, tack, measurements, parasites, and more. The junior team, consisting of Liam Anderson, Layton Firebaugh, and Montana Moore, placed 11th in their event, with Moore achieving the 18th highest individual score. The senior team, which included Rose Broyhill, Colton Jones, and Carly O’Brien, also performed well in the senior event.

Liam Anderson, Layton Firebaugh, Colton Jones, and Carly O’Brien participated in the FFA Quiz Bowl contest. The participants completed a written exam that covered FFA history, general knowledge, leadership, and agricultural education. Later, the team competed in a fast-paced buzzer round against other middle school teams. They finished in 5th place in both the Quiz Bowl exam and 5th in the team tournament. Jones was the 12th highest individual in the exam portion of the contest.

Savannah Jones participated in the State Agricultural Education LDE. As part of the competition, she was tasked with developing a lesson plan and materials for a 6th to 8th-grade lesson on natural resources. Jones created a 60-minute lesson that focused on leaf shapes, dichotomous keys, and tree identification. She presented a 20-minute portion of her lesson to a panel of judges, using cooperative learning strategies. Ultimately, Jones placed 4th as the highest individual in her category.

Jay Harris, Pierson Harvey, Tim Henderson, and Chloe Wilson participated in the Senior Agricultural Mechanics contest. In this competition, participants were required to demonstrate their arc welding skills by performing a butt-joint weld and applying knowledge of agricultural electrification. Additionally, the team completed various problem-solving tasks and answered test questions related to machinery, electricity, compact equipment, structures, and environmental and natural resources. The team finished in 6th place overall, and Harris achieved recognition as the 3rd highest individual scorer.

The Avian Bowl CDE involves a team-based round of trivia questions and an individual test that assesses members’ knowledge of poultry management and sciences. ACHS team members included Chloe Dejong, Jay Harris, Pierson Harvey, and Chloe Wilson. Harris was the 6th high individual, and the ACHS team placed 5th overall.

Evelyn Johnson and Kat Broyhill represented their chapter in the state Youth Discussion Meet contest, organized by the Virginia Farm Bureau Young Farmers. Both students were required to research five current agricultural issues and facilitate productive discussions with their peers. Each participant demonstrated skills in productive thinking, problem-solving, and public speaking. Broyhill performed well in the event, while Johnson advanced through two rounds of competition and reached the “Elite 8” round.

Ethan Dowdy participated in the Employment Skills LDE, where FFA members engaged in a series of mock interviews. Prior to the event, Dowdy prepared a resume and cover letter, and he submitted a job description to the judges. He completed two challenging interviews and participated in a networking activity to showcase his interview skills. Dowdy excelled in the event and achieved 6th place.

Christian Dawson, Lainey Hamilton, Lorelei Holt, and Maris Wilson participated in the state Floriculture event. This contest required students to complete a general knowledge exam and identify plants and equipment. Students also had to identify pests, disorders, and diseases of plants.  Each participant demonstrated their skills in flower arranging and potting of young plants. Lainey Hamilton achieved recognition as the 10th highest individual scorer. Overall, the team performed exceptionally well, placing 6th in the competition.

Chloe Dejong, Alyssa Marsh, Rylee Stratton, and Peyton Thacker represented ACHS in the Livestock Judging CDE. Participants were required to evaluate live classes of beef cattle, swine, lambs, and goats. They assessed production statistics based on herd Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) data for various classes. The team finished as the 11th highest overall in the event. Stratton ranked in the top 20 individuals and advanced to the final round, where she presented brief oral speeches to a panel of judges, explaining her class placements. Stratton performed exceptionally well as an individual competitor.

Christian Dawson, Lainey Hamilton, Evelyn Johnson, and Maris Wilson were members of the Nursery Landscape CDE team. Each participant completed a written exam covering basic horticultural principles related to the production, marketing, usage, and maintenance of landscape plants and turf. They were required to identify various plants, pests, disorders, and beneficial insects. Additionally, each student participated in an estimating practicum that tested their ability to interpret landscape drawings. Hamilton ranked as the 10th highest individual, and the team overall placed 5th. Virginia FFA offers a unique opportunity to showcase schools that compete in both the Floriculture and Nursery Landscape CDEs. The Horticulture contest is an opportunity to identify the top horticulture programs in Virginia. Appomattox was the state runner-up.

The Veterinary Science CDE assessed students’ knowledge in various areas of modern veterinary practice, including pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, general animal care, identification of pet breeds, veterinary equipment, and parasites. The Appomattox team, consisting of Niki Ballagh, Gracie Covington, Autumn Harris, and Savannah Jones, excelled in the written exam, identification, and math components of the event. They achieved 1st place in the state, outperforming 27 other teams. Additionally, Covington was the top individual, finishing in 1st place, while Harris placed 5th, Jones placed 7th, and Ballagh placed 9th. As the state champion Veterinary Science team, they will represent ACHS and Virginia at the National FFA Veterinary Science CDE during the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN, this October.

Niki Ballagh, Chloe Dejong, Jay Harris, and Tim Henderson received their State FFA Degree, the highest degree that a state association can bestow upon its members. Attaining this level of membership demonstrates these members’ superb record-keeping skills and FFA participation.

Savannah Jones earned recognition as a state proficiency award winner. This program aims to honor students who excel in work-based learning projects as part of the Supervised Agricultural Experience program. Jones was named the state champion in Agricultural Education. She has played a key role in organizing several agricultural education events, including “Little Farmers’ Day” and “Kindergarten Day” at ACHS. Additionally, Jones has led multiple workshops at Virginia Cooperative Extension events such as Central Virginia Farm Day and Farm and Family Day.

Appomattox FFA members would like to thank the many individuals involved in making this trip possible. We express our sincerest thanks to the Appomattox FFA Alumni and all the sponsors who provided scholarships to members to participate in these events. Without their help, our dreams would not have become a reality. We are thankful to Karen Spicer, who provided transportation. Many local individuals, organizations, and businesses also worked to help prepare students for the competitions. Individuals or organizations wishing to sponsor the chapter’s trip to the National FFA Convention should call FFA Advisors Elizabeth Duncan, Dani Hodges, Cassie Long, or Ed McCann at 434-352-8396.

  • Lost in the Mail? Supervisors OK $5K for VASAP After Funding Request Goes Astray

Sometimes, even vital requests get caught in bureaucratic crosswinds – or maybe just put in the wrong mailbox. The Appomattox Board of Supervisors approved a $5,000 funding allocation for the Southside Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (better known as VASAP) for the upcoming FY2026 budget, but only after learning the request nearly didn’t make it to them at all.

According to the agenda and brief discussion, VASAP Executive Director Roy-Keith Lloyd had met with Sheriff Richardson during budget talks, where it came up that the County hadn’t received VASAP’s funding request. An email from Lloyd to County Administrator Susan Adams revealed the culprit: the request had apparently been mailed to the wrong address.

Luckily, the corrected request landed in time for Monday’s meeting. VASAP is the court-ordered program folks convicted of DUI offenses often must complete, involving education and monitoring (like those ignition interlock devices). Sheriff Richardson, who recently joined the regional VASAP board, explained that while VASAP services are mandated by the courts, the program isn’t entirely self-sufficient without contributions from the localities it serves. Appomattox recently became part of the expanded Southside VASAP region after the Piedmont ASAP (based in Farmville) dissolved due to financial pressures and merged operations.

Supervisor Hipps questioned why the County hadn’t funded VASAP recently if it was locally supported. Administrator Adams and Supervisor Carter clarified that the County had funded predecessor programs years ago when Appomattox was served by the Farmville-based group, but this was the first request from the newly consolidated Southside entity based out of Halifax.

Supervisor Carter moved to approve the $5,000, seconded by Reverend Jones. The vote was unanimous. So, despite a detour through the postal service, the funding seems secured, helping ensure these necessary, if unpopular, services remain available locally – a reminder that even fighting drunk driving involves navigating budgets and, occasionally, misaddressed mail.

  • Church Street Waterline Project Road Closures: What You Need To Know

Church Street Waterline Project Road Closures: What You Need To Know

    View on TownofAppomattox.com

The main purpose of this project is to improve the water capacity, reliability, and pressure for businesses and residents currently served along approximately 6100 feet of downtown water pipeline. In addition, it adds seven fire hydrants along Church Street and Red House Road.

If you are a Town of Appomattox business owner facing Church or Main Street, you may have been wondering how soon and how much impact the Church Street Waterline project might have on you in the coming months.

This article addresses those issues; it will be updated regularly with the most current information related to construction as the project progress.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience and attention to the safety of workers, pedestrians, and other drivers along the construction route.

Thus far we have experienced no accidents or injuries on the project, and everyone’s goal is 100% completion with zero accidents/injuries. We, our contractors, and their subcontractors are doing everything possible to improve safety and minimize the impact on businesses and residents.

    Waterline Key Points:

    1. All plans are subject to weather, damage, and design changes in the field if required.
    2. All traffic patterns/signage and placements are controlled by VDOT.
    3. All work related to the railroad crossing is subject to Norfolk and Southern’s  safety and scheduling requirements.

    4. We expect the project to run 9-11 months.

    5. Currently we expect to reach Main Street in late Spring or early summer.

    6. About 100 feet of the pipeline will have to be installed using underground boring techniques.  This is the section of Church Street that crosses the RR tracks. Boring will begin about 50 feet from each side of the tracks.  Please note that this is the most complex section of the entire project and the portion for which we have least control of the schedule.  For safety’s sake, Norfolk and Southern has very strict requirements and a very demanding delivery schedule they must work around when any construction project impacts their train routes.
    7. Main Street facing businesses will see the least construction impacts, but there will be some differences among Main Street facing businesses.
      1. The earliest expected timeframe for any Main Street business is early summer 2024.

      2. Businesses closest to Church Street are expected to experience the least number of service interruptions.

      3. We will provide a detailed schedule as we get closer to April 2024

      4. Main street is not scheduled for road closures.

    8. Church Street facing business and residents:
      1. Short sections of Church Street will be reduced to a single lane when necessary for safety.
      2. Once construction begins on the north side of the RR tracks on Church Street (side nearest train depot) single lane traffic conditions will be used as necessary.
      3. On occasion, the traffic on Church between the RR tracks and Harrell Street will be one way (allowing only left turns off Main Street).

      4. Individual businesses and residents may expect one 1–4-hour service interruption but only when connecting their business/residence to the new water line.
      5. At least one point of vehicle access and exit will remain available during construction.
      6. Some driveways may be temporarily blocked during the construction day and enabled in the evenings using metal plate covers for access after 5PM access
      7. No boil orders are expected
    9. Project Organization, Scheduling and Sequence:
      1. The picture above shows the next five steps of the project:
        1. Step 1 Runs from Red House Road’s intersection with Church Street to Lee-Grant Intersection (1100 feet)
        2. Step 2 Runs from intersection of Lee-Grant to boring pit on south side of RR tracks

        3. Step “X”, Runs across the Church Street RR tracks from the South side boring pit to the North side boring pit. (approximately 100′)

        4. Step 3 Step 3 North Side Bore Pit to Harrel Street (180 feet)

        5. Step 4 Step  Harrel Street  to Oakleigh  Street (320 feet)

        6. Step 5  Oakleigh Street to Confederate (320 feet)

      2. The pace of the project (how fast it goes) is primarily dependent on the ground, road traffic, and pipeline conditions found once digging begins.

      3. The slowest progress so far was 20 feet/day along a street where it was necessary to continually pump water out of the construction area.

      4. More recently,  we are averaging about 100 feet of pipeline/day.

      5. Unfortunately most of the existing underground utilities were installed before highly accurate Geographic Information Systems (GIS ) and Global Positioning System (GPS) data were invented, so it is necessary to dig accurately and slowly along older street area
