This Library has taken an active role in our community for nearly 3 decades and currently we are working in conjunction with Friends of Holliday Lake by displaying their “Stained Glass Vision” quilt they are raffling off to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and Friends of Holliday Lake. This beautiful quilt was donated by Celeste of Country Lane Quilter in honor of her dear friend Lorraine. Lorriane, who has since passed away from cancer, started this quilt and it was finished by Celeste and friends in her memory. If you would like to see the quilt in person we encourage you to stop by the Library. For chances on this quilt, you may purchase tickets at the Library, or you may contact Celeste at 603-547-5903 or visit the Friends of Holliday Lake’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100080228708707

The Jamerson Library, in conjunction with Neighborhood Forest, is offering a free indoor plant program to engage youth by providing them with a small piece of nature to care for and watch grow inside their homes. Indoor plants offer many benefits similar to those of trees, including purifying the air, improving health and well-being, enhancing concentration/focus, and more. This Fall, the Neighborhood Forest will be giving over 10,000 succulents to children to nurture inside their homes! The Jamerson Library encourages parents/guardians to register their children by October 28th for a free succulent kit. We expect these kits to arrive by mid-November, all participants will be contacted when the kits arrive. Lawrence is scared at first, but as he grows more comfortable, he starts to recognize the uniqueness of the forest and its creatures. Raining Dogs & Cats, Plants & Plans

The Library didn’t let a little rain, ok, a lot of rain dampened our Royal Party on Saturday, September 27th. We simply moved into the community room to welcome knights and princesses for cupcakes, games, and sword fights! We had such a good time and plan on offering another Royal Party next spring for those who may have missed out on the fun or wish to attend as a returning guest.

The rain continued on Monday, September 29th, but it didn’t slow the Library down. Library Director Mrs. Cindy Scheu and a staff member set up a vending station at “The Good Neighbor Information and Help Center” program hosted by Grace Hills Baptist Church. The purpose of this program was to offer local seniors much-needed information about the importance of wills, Medicare and health insurance, financial preparedness, bank scams, and more. The Library along with several other vendors offered information directed toward senior citizens to potentially enhance their well-being mentally, financially, and physically. The Library passed out newsletters, other library-related information, swag bags and bookmarks to each person who stopped by our booth.

The dogs were back! Twice yearly Old Dominion K-9 SAR (Search And Rescue) from Tennessee comes to central Virginia to train personal and professional working dogs all over the east coast in the art of man trailing and other skills need to locate persons in need. They practice in the town’s parking lot behind the Library, and staff welcomes them inside to help tune the skills of handlers and dogs alike. The Library staff put out a table with fresh hot coffee, cream, assorted sweeteners and donuts to show their appreciation for all the hard work that this group does to keep everyone safe and give hope that rescue resources are available when the time arises.

On Wednesday, October 1st’s Story and Craft Time Library Fairy traded in her wings for a witch’s hat as she presented the book “The Leaf Thief” by Alice Hemming and Nicola Slater. Squirrel loves counting the leaves on his tree – red leaves, gold leaves, orange, and more. But hold on! One of his leaves is missing! On a quest to find the missing leaf, Squirrel teams up with his good friend Bird to discover who the leaf thief could be among their forest friends. The kids enjoyed snacks while making a squirrel hide-and-seek leaf scene. Our next Story and Craft Time will be on Wednesday, October 8th, at 11:00 am and 12:00 pm, featuring author Kerri Rundstrom as she reads her book “Max and the Moo Mystery”! Curtis provided participants with the opportunity to educate themselves on established and new banking scams and how to protect yourself from the classic and ever-changing trends designed to fraudulently gain access to your funds. The public was allowed to ask questions, express concerns, or share personal stories. Curtis had several informational sheets and bookmarks to remind those that attended the signs to watch out for. The next Farmers Bank presentation will be on Tuesday, October 21st, starting at 5:00 pm in the Library’s community room.

The much-anticipated Fall Plant Swap was held in the Library’s community room on Thursday, October 2nd. The Library carries a nice selection indoor and outdoor gardens, plants, succulents, landscaping books and a growing seed library.

A HUGE thank you to owner Alexis from Griffin’s Garden, an up-and-coming micro flower farm new to Appomattox. Griffin’s Garden was the first business to host herb/vegetable/flower beds at the Library! Alexis personally came to the Library on Friday to plant lettuce, spinach, and wildflowers in the three beds that Griffin’s Garden is sponsoring! She has plans on changing the beds out seasonally to host a variety of herbs, vegetables, and flowers to attract local bees, birds, and butterflies. The Library welcomes families, businesses and other organizations to sponsor their own bed(s) of zone-friendly plants.

On Saturday October 4th the Library Director hosted her monthly Creative Class for Adults. Using recycled tin cans, paint, mod-podge, and napkins attendees created pretty planters. The Library provided all supplies including dirt and pre-rooted plants so everyone took home a completed planter.

The Library has a short but full week of programs next week, including several family resource organizations, Story & Craft Time, Teen & Adult Book Clubs, Girls Who Code, a poster contest creation time hosted by Robert E Lee Soil and Water Conservation District, a spooky telling of an Edgar Allen Poe short story, and hosting a private movie time.

  • My Town’s Water: Where does it come from, where does it go?

My Town’s Water: Where does it come from, where does it go?

Publisher’s Note: As publisher of the Appomattox Times, I am pleased to present this student essay. Remington Clusman has taken an interest in our community’s water and sewer system, researched the subject, and prepared the following piece. It is encouraging to see young people engage with matters of local importance, and I am proud that someone with such promise calls Appomattox home.

    – Nathan Simpson

We use water every day, from taking showers to cooking food, but you may have wondered sometime in the past, “Where does the water come from, and where does it go when you’re done with it?” Today I will be talking about public water systems. From where it comes from to where it goes, this field of infrastructure is very important.

    Water In

Now when you were a kid, you may have thought that water is magically created when it comes out of a faucet, but this is far from true. Water comes from many places but not from thin air. So, we need to find an applicable water source to use. Options include natural things like rivers, lakes and underground streams, and man-made sources like reservoirs, and dams. Water can travel through many pipes to reach a town or city, and then into the plumbing of houses to be used in all sorts of things.

You may be wondering where our drinking water comes from, because the water in rivers and ponds are completely undrinkable. Well, (no pun intended) you can get drinking water from rivers and ponds, just not directly. The water has to go through a complicated filtration process in order to become drinkable. When this process is finished, the water goes through a pipeline to the town, then a pump moves the water into a water tower, then in the morning, gravity pushes the water through more pipes and into homes.

Like I said, the water gets to our homes through gravity, because the tower where the water is stored is so high, but if the town or city has varying elevation, it can be difficult to get water places. This is because buildings that are higher will be harder to reach by the water and pressure will be too low and water won’t get to the houses and businesses on the top of hills. While buildings on the bottom of hills will be easier to get to. You might think that this is a good thing, right? Just put the tower at the highest point of elevation in the town. WRONG! If it is easy for the water to get to buildings, then the pressure could be too high, and then the pressure would exceed the ratings of the plumbing, and the pipes burst.

    Sewage Out

You may have wondered before where things go after they go down our drains. You may have thought that they all lead directly to the ocean. Unfortunately, this is incorrect, because instead of leading to the ocean, the stuff in your drains leads to your nearest sewage treatment plant. The reason being is because dumping raw sewage into the ocean can POLLUTION! Da, da, DAAAA(#TeamSeas). Anyway, it takes a lot of engineering to get so much poop from point a to point b. Things you need to take into consideration is how close the sewer pipes are to the surface. Too close and things like rainwater can find its way into pipes and cause them to overflow into city streets, but too deep, and it will take too much money and time to dig a trench. Other things to consider are the growth of the city over time, and the speed of the sewage, too slow and solids can build up and cause a blockage, too fast and the water can damage the pipes.

After the raw sewage is done traveling through the pipes, it will arrive at a wastewater treatment plant. A lot of the stuff that makes the water dirty is actually dirt, or small particles that flow with the water. The way these particles are removed is really simple. Remember when I said the solids can build up if the liquid is too slow? Well, this is actually used in our favor here. How it works is that the pipe is widened to slow down the water to the point where the dirt will settle at the bottom where they will be mechanically removed. Then the workers at the plant might release some bacteria into the water to clean it. Then once the water is clean enough it is pumped out of the plant to the nearest body of water.

    Appomattox Water System

In the town I live, Appomattox Virginia, we have a slight issue with our water system. Basically, we were using wells to supply the town, but instead of all being above separate underground streams, a hole in the bedrock had connected them all, meaning we had less water than we thought. So, we had to negotiate with Campbell county to give us some of their water since they had extra, but we had a disagreement involving the landfill and now when our deal expires, Dec 31, 2030, they won’t renew it, and we will have a shortage of water once again.

Possible solutions include building a reservoir, which could take 10-15 years and over 70 million dollars, drilling new wells with the help of things like seismic imaging in order to find separate lakes this time, making a new deal with Campbell County, which might be very expensive for us, or making a deal with another county in Virginia.

    Conclusion

In summary, it takes a lot to build and design public water systems. And some even have problems like ours. But your Town’s water system probably isn’t exactly like mine.

  • Cardwell: Let’s Keep Appomattox a Hallmark Town

Cardwell: Let’s Keep Appomattox a Hallmark Town

Publisher’s Note: The following is the full text of Councilman McKinley D. Cardwell’s remarks delivered during Council Comments at the September 8, 2025 meeting of the Appomattox Town Council. It is published here verbatim as part of our continuing coverage of local government.

To the Mayor, Council, and Town Manager,

Our 100-year celebration, in my view, is just the start. This Council and previous councils have built a community worth living in and growing up in. However, this body is stretched too thin, and while our actions are vital, I believe they are not enough. We govern in a world more connected than ever, yet also very disconnected. The digital age has led society to invest in technology and pull away from one another. Instead of sharing ideas, we focus only on ourselves. Instead of moving together toward a higher goal, we each fight for our own hills.

We can’t fix this ourselves, but we have a community of wonderful people who can and who have been involved from the start. I suggest we focus on uplifting and highlighting ministries, non-profits, and other special groups that truly make an impact at the ground level. We’ve dwelled in negativity for far too long. I’ve come to believe that the best thing I can do as an elected official is to give people more voice and more power in efforts to improve and change our community. The bank account of community spirit is running low. We have many contributors; we need to recognize and invest in them so they can carry the mission forward.

Second, we need to begin again preparing for our community picnic, and every year from now on. The turnout at our 100th anniversary celebration was terrific, and I genuinely believe we can do even better in the future, and I hope to rival any small town that can ignite a June Thanksgiving like we did. The Mayor, the Council, the staff, and dedicated volunteers made it all happen. I am grateful for our united effort. From Mrs. Mobley helping before the event to Treasurer Ray being the last one there picking up trash and restoring Courtland field to its original condition. It was hard work, but through our combined effort and faith in our town, we pulled it off. Let’s aim to do it again, each time a little better.

Finally, our community efforts should happen quarterly. From activating local youth in spring with our Mayor for a day to hopefully in the future having a council for a day, to hosting our community picnic in the summer, supporting the community and town at large with the railroad festival in the fall, and finally, developing something grand for our community in winter. We have had many great ideas from numerous council members as well as local community members who are looking for a nostalgic feeling, and I don’t think folks would mind if their town reflected a Hallmark movie set every now and then.

If our community members pride us on having small town charm in our past SWOT Analysis, I say we make it more of a reality every year, so that even when we grow, we will grow stronger and grow closer because the community chose to do so.

Respectfully Submitted to The Mayor, Council, and Town Manager,

    McKinley D. Cardwell

  • Opinion: Borrowing from Monticello

    Opinion: Borrowing from Monticello

Recently, an anonymous letter circulated questioning an essay I published in April, before announcing my candidacy for the Board of Supervisors. Since it has been brought up, I’d like to address it directly.

First, the missing article. The Appomattox Times website was migrated to a new platform this summer. In the process, several older articles, including that essay, were mistakenly left on the old server. This has since been corrected. There was no attempt to hide anything. In fact, I published it openly under my own name, months before I was a candidate.

Second, the “wealthy landowner” charge. Every property I own is right here in Appomattox County. My current residence and two rentals in town and twenty acres in Hixburg, all mortgaged, purchased with hard-earned dollars, and on the tax rolls. Nothing was inherited. I’ve invested here because I believe in this county’s future.

As for the essay itself, I stand by its spirit. I was writing as a new father about the burden one generation can place on the next. Thomas Jefferson wrote to James Madison in 1789: “The earth belongs to the living, not to the dead. No man can, by natural right, oblige the lands he occupied… to the payment of debts contracted by him.” Jefferson’s point was clear: one generation has no natural right to eat up the substance of those who follow. Yet this past April, Washington passed a budget that will add $5 trillion to the national debt. My point was simple: if Congress will not think of our children, then at least here at home, we must.

That was an essay, not a policy proposal before the town. My record on council speaks to what I’ve fought for: water, sewer, trash, and economic development. Check the minutes, check the votes, check the statements: you will see I’ve been leading on the very issues our town needs solved first.

Anonymous letters can throw around labels like “socialist.” But Jefferson was no socialist, he was the first Virginian to warn that generational debt robs the future. That is the tradition I am standing in, and that is the standard I will continue to uphold.

Poet Laureate Launches Veterans’ Poetry Project

LEXINGTON — Virginia Poet Laureate Mattie Quesenberry Smith, Ph.D., an English instructor at Virginia Military Institute, has launched Perseverance and Resilience, a statewide project supporting veterans’ health and well-being through poetry.

The initiative, organized with multiple regional libraries and arts organizations, will host workshops led by creative writing instructors and veteran poets. Participants will reflect on how they’ve persevered and found resilience during service and civilian life.

The project features a veterans’ poetry contest in memory of retired Navy Cmdr. Edward W. Lull, former Poetry Society of Virginia president. Contest winners will see their work produced as broadsides displayed in veteran-serving facilities statewide. An anthology will publish selected poems, with two public celebrations planned.

All U.S. veterans may submit up to three poems, each no longer than 45 lines, by Sept. 15, 2025, via Poetry Society of Virginia’s submission portal.

Smith’s project is supported by a $50,000 fellowship from the Academy of American Poets, awarded to 23 poets laureate nationwide for civic literary projects. Matching grants will go to nonprofit partners assisting with the work.
